Atlanta Sports

Atlanta Braves
The Major League Baseball team, Atlanta Braves is based in Atlanta, Georgia, since 1966. The oldest running team in Major League Baseball, Braves have won 16 divisional titles, nine National League pennants, and three World Series championships.

In 1870, the team came into existence as Boston Red Stockings. From Red Stockings to Beaneaters and finally towards the end of 1912 the team changed their name to Atlanta Braves.

 In 1948 the braves won the pennant, behind the pitching of Spahn and Johnny Sain, who won 39 games between them. In 1957, the braves won their first World Series Championship. In 1995, the team won World Series. In 90s the Braves was considered as one of the best team in all of the sports with 10 consecutive divisional pennants and world series.

The Atlanta Braves finished 2005 season with a .556 win average that placed them at the top of National League East. The schedule of the team for the year 2007 features a home opener against the New York Mets.

Atlanta Falcons
A professional American football team, Atlanta Falcons is based in Atlanta. The Atlanta Falcons were born in 1965. The team is a member of the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League since 1966.

The Falcons have been steadily improving and have won one conference championship and three Division Championships. During the 1960s & early 1970s the team produced several top players, such as: Nobis, Claude Humphrey, and George Kunz.

The team wears uniforms of black, red, silver, and white. In 1992, the Falcons would move from the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium to the Georgia Dome. In 1998, the team made a record of 14-2 and reach Super Bowl XXXIII. The team lost the game but still known as the most celebrated team in franchise history.

During 2000 regular season the Falcons went on to finish with a 4-12 record. During 2003 playoff game the Green Bay Packers were defeated by the Atlanta Falcons. In 2005, the Atlanta Falcons finished 8-8. The Falcons used their first pick on Virginia Tech DB Jimmy Williams during 2006 NFL Draft.

 

Atlanta Hawks
An American professional basketball team named Atlanta Hawks is based in Atlanta Georgia. In 1946, the franchise was formed when the squad was known as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The team plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

In 1949, NBL merged with the Basketball Association of America and formed the National Basketball Association. Under the leadership of coach Red Auerbach, the Blackhawks reached the playoffs. In 1951, the team moved to Milwaukee and became the Hawks.

In 1953, the Hawks drafted Bob Pettit but still remained near the bottom of the league. In 1955, the Atlanta Hawks moved to St. Louis, Missouri. In 1958, the Hawk won the franchise's only NBA title. In 1958 and in 1960 the Hawks advanced to the NBA Finals but lost against the Celtics.

In 1968, the Hawks moved to Atlanta, Georgia. In the 1993-94 season, coach Wilkens led the team to 57 victories. But still it was considered as the league worst team and in 2004, the team was sold to a group of executives by the name of Atlanta Spirit LLC. In the 2005 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks selected Marvin Williams, the most potential player of draft class. The team showed little improvement in 2006.

Atlanta Thrashers
A professional ice hockey team, Atlanta Thrashers is based in Atlanta, Georgia. The team plays in the National Hockey League. In 1997, the National Hockey League awarded one of three expansion franchises to Atlanta. The nickname “Thrashers” was derived from Georgia's state bird - the Brown Thrasher. The Atlanta Thrashers play all their home games at Philips Arena.

In the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, the team selected Patrik Stefan. Same year the team played their first game losing to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions, the New Jersey Devils. Their first triumph came a week later when Damian Rhodes shutout the New York Islanders 2-0 in long Island.

In 2003, the Thrashers along with Atlanta Hawks were sold to a group of executives by Time Warner. Same year in the month of September, the great player Dan Synder died in a car accident as a passenger and another player Dany Heatley was seriously injured. The team dedicated the 2003-04 NHL season to the Dan Synder.

The 2005-06 season saw the Thrashers win a club-record 41 games. The current team colors are ice blue, navy blue, red, and gold.
